Celebrate “America Recycles Day”!

America Recycles DayDid you know, Thursday Nov. 15th, is America Recycles Day“?

No?  You’re not alone.  A national holiday and under rated in my opinion, it is the perfect day to remind yourself, family and friends that recycling is important!  Curious why? Read more…

Take the initiative and recruit recycling participation at work, school and of course, in your home.

Here’s how:

  1. First, confirm recycling policies and guidelines.  Know what you can recycle and who’s responsible for making sure it gets recycled.  Unfortunately, there is no consistency when it comes to materials companies are willing to recycle.  Basically, it’s whatever will make them the most $.  No recycling policies in place?  Kindly suggest to the head honcho, your company creates one.
  2. Check recycle bin access.  Are recycle bins easy to locate and use?  Do you have enough bins?  Shop here at my favorite family owned business, Maxi Containers for recycle and compost bins.  Otherwise, check out our previous blog to see how PLP captured and reused old bins in the Farmington Public schools.
  3. Place recycle bins and trash cans adjacent to one another to encourage use.
  4. Use signs with pictures of recyclable materials.  Pictures on the bins helps clarify exactly what can go in bin.
  5. Finally, don’t be bashful .  Give friendly reminders to colleagues.  Encourage them to recycle by making it the “norm”.  Behavior change takes time.

Remember our motto is “Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”.  All components are critical to protecting Earth’s resources and preventing environmental degradation.  My goal is for people to understand the impact of individual actions and realize (sooner rather than later) that environmental protection is morally imperative for the future of our children.  Happy America Recycle Day!
